Why?

Why do I drive an old car? I drive an old car, but not for the reasons you may expect. Some say that “new cars don’t have any character” and that “old cars are interesting.” Not all of them are. Mine is a very staid, very grandad-typical car that is absolutely normal. It has a 305 in the front, a THM250-C in the middle, and a 7.5” open rear end in the back. It’s rusty, slow, and has a ton of various problems that need to be attended to. So why do I drive it? Why do I like this car so much?

Here’s why. Old cars are a dying breed. With oil getting more scarce by the minute and more focus on Eco-friendliness than traditional gasoline burning fun, we must cherish these cars while we can. It just so happens that a G-body feels like a classic, yet has modern reliability. It’s not rare, but it’s not common either. It’s an interesting anachronism that is the missing link between the tanks of the 70s and the FWD cars of the mid-80s. I drive an old car because it’s fun, and you must enjoy these cars while you can. Why do you drive what you drive?

I think the Invicta might help further along the scarcity of gasoline a bit...

Damn tree huggers...You’ll have to pry this beautiful explosive combustion juice and ICEs from my cold, dead hands or kill me. And even then, I’ll be fighting you from ze grave, I swear it!!

Also, I drive my 944 and our 911(when it isn’t broken) because they’re more fun to drive than any new car I’ve ever driven. Once autonomous cars come along, they’ll have to kill me if they want me to stop driving.

I really wanted a 944 as a first car, I just couldn't stomach paying $1000 for a clutch kit.

I drive a 1995 toyota tacoma. I drive it because I’m about to be a poor college student who doesn’t feel like keeping my old Saab running. So I got the toyota for reliability and fun together (a rare package). I don’t mind driving slow and I’m quite pleased with getting 25mpg on he highway and being able to drive offroad. I can also move stuff around.

I drive it because it looks handsome to me, has gaudy ‘80s stripes which I adore, I can work on it inexpensively in my own driveway, I can change the oil and filter without jacking up the car and crawling underneath, and I love small pickups. Bonus: it has a Toyota R series motor in it, which I couldn’t kill on my last one, so I am a believer.

80s stripes are the best. Also, the DIY factor is a big plus for owning an older car.

I also think there’s self bargaining power. Rides a little rough? Meh I’ll buy shocks maybe next week, maybe if I have time put them in by new years. Window fell out of track? Rip of door panel, add rubber and silicone and lubricating oil, maybe I have to guide the window up or down to start, but it becomes second nature. I’m saying you’ll up with little quirks that you would never tolerate on a newer car.

I completely agree. My Lincoln is by far the slowest thing I have ever driven yet it’s the car that brings me the most joy out of everything I have ever owned and I used to own a Challenger SRT8 so you know I’m not just talking out of my ass. This car just makes me happy plain and simple. Takes me back to simpler time when we didn’t need bluetooth, GPS or heated seats to get where we were going.

This thing is virtually bullet proof. Yes the 400M isn’t as good as a 460 would of been but it’s low compression makes it severely under-stressed and being backed by a C6 transmission and the world famous Ford 9” rear end. With the amount of power this puts out(159hp) There is nothing I could ever do to break these components even if I tried unless I drained the oil out of them.

They are really cheap to buy and really cheap to run (gasoline aside of course).

The best part is that they are super simple and cheap to fix(unless you break a bolt in the head. Ask me how I know).
